GREEK CATHOLICS SUFFERING IN RUTHENIA SOVIET ZONE TYRANNY (10 a.m.) LONDON. March 24. Greek Catholics in Ruihenia had been violently and bitterly persecuted in (he past year, said Cardinal Griffin at a mass of intercession at Westminster Cathedral for persecuted Catholics in eastern Europe. lie added that the entire episcopate and seven bi-hops had been arrested. Three had died and the remainder were still imprisoned or deported. Many iiad been murdered and the rest of the clergy were placed in a condition under which they were unable to exercise their ministry. The church in Yugoslavia was also subjected to persecution. Bishops priests and lay people had been imprisoned and many had been murdered. Catholic schools and church property had been confiscated.
In many other regions now within Russian zones priests and the faithful had been subjected to secret police tyranny. Thousands were fleeing from their persecutors. “We invite all who would proclaim the sacred rights of man to join us in protesting against the brutal treatment meted oat to those who fought that men might be free,” lie added.
