AUSTRALIAN FORCES
JAP. FRATERNISATION
CANBERRA, March 22,
General Northcott, commanding officer of the British occupation force in Japan, is reported to have told the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, that the reports of widespread fraternisation between the Australian troops and Japanese women are greatly exaggerated.
Mr. Chifley is believed to be satisfied with tlie supervision and conduct of the Australian troops, and that the limited contact with the Japanese girls was creating no problem. The authorities realised the impossibility of complete segregation of the Australian troops. Therefore they were allowed to visit dance halls, where they danced with professional Japanese dancers under strict military supervision. The men in the main were.not mingling with the Japanese on terms of friendliness.
