GISBORNE’S WIN

FIRST INNINGS’ LEAD INTER-SCHOOL CRICKET DUNPHY’S GOOD STRIKE Though the weather had improved slightly during the day, play in the annual cricket match between Gisborne and Napier High School teams did not progress far yesterday afternoon, when the teams took the field again after a lengthy interruption due to rain. The homo team was able to complete its first innings, and Napier had just opened its second innings when further rain fell and caused another interruption. No further play ’was possible and Gisborne won the match on the first innings. When stumps were drawn on Thursday evening Napier had made 99 in their first knock, and Gisborne had 120 on the hoard for the loss of four wickets. The resumption of play yesterday found Dunphy and Walker together. Walker having recovered from the injury which necessitated his retirement on the first- clay. They carried the score along a little further before they were separated, and from that stage on Bignell was the only one who stood up to the Napier bowling with any effect. Wilcox was the not out. batsman when the innings closed for 175, 55 having been added during the afternoon to tho overnight, score. For the visiting side, Mason proved himself the most effective bowler, and he took five of the Gisborne wickets for 70 runs, his 25 overs with six maidens being a creditable? contribution to the game. Harte took four wickets for 27 runs, bowling 14 overs, of which six were maidens, but his captures were among the fail-enders of the batting side. , , . - Napier had just opened their second innings when tho game? was closed by further rain, and a first-innings win was credited to Gisborne.
