AUSTRALIAN UNION COMMUNISM OPPOSED SYDNEY DOCKYARD MEN SYDNEY, March 20. A general assault on Communist domination of the naval dockyards in Sydney last night resulted in 550 employees deciding to break away from the Communist-controlled Ironworkers’ Union and join the Australian Workers’ Union. At a meeting of naval supply depot employees, speakers claimed that Communists had begun a reign of terror at the naval supply depots in Sydney. This was because employees had refused to take part in the 24-hour stoppage called by the Ironworkers’ Union in December. Five depots were represented at the meeting. In Melbourne munition workers have signed a petition for the removal from office of members of the management committee of the Arms, Explosive and Munition Workers’ Federation, which was amalgamated with the Ironworkers’ Union in 1944, but which was still registered in the Arbitration Court. The meeting protested at unnecessary stoppages of work by the Ironworkers’ Union, and all of the members present gave notice of resignation.
