DAMAGE BY FIRE
STATE FOREST AREAS (P.A.) ROTORUA, March 6. Throughout the Deriod of bush fires the State Forest Service had not lost one tree of its exotic plantations, and the area of native bush swept by fires was not large, it was stated yesterday. Timber from the native bush burns will be salvaged within two years. The recent rains have allowed some relaxation by fire-watchers. Gangs are seeking out smouldering logs, but others of the army of men engaged in firefighting are being dispersed. Army personnel are being released from their stations at Taupo, and only skeleton crews are being retained by the fire brigades called out. At Rotorua, the air force contingent, originally of 100 men, has been reduced to 10 men. who are keeping things in readiness should the need for a larger force again become necessary. A stormy week-end has been succeeded by cold days with higher southerly winds, and at the moment there appears little likelihood of further rain.
