GISBORNE WELCOMES N.Z. FIRE BRIGADES
r IPO all visitors who have arrived to participate in the annual A conference of the New Zealand United Eire Brigades’ Association Gisborne extends a warm welcome. That welcome is infinitely warmer than the weather has been, during the last few da vs It is to be hoped, however, that the friendly strangers now in "our midst will understand that this parched countryside has rejoiced in the coming of the rain. There has been much music on the roof of late—the music of heavy, soaking showers which will quench the desperate thirst of the soil, revive pastures and gardens, send adequate supplies of pure water surging through the borough s mains and fill empty tanks. _ . Moreover, those few critics who bad previously questioned the wisdom of using the town’s hitherto depleted water for the brigade demonstrations will have been silenced: and it is likely that the casino- of the general fire hazards as a result of the persistent downpours’on tinder-dry growth will give Gisborne’s own fire-fighters a better chance to join wholeheartedly in the business of the conference and participate in the associative carnival features. If the local climate lives up to its reputation, there will he many warm, sunny days ahead—days during which visitors from all parts of the Dominion will enjoy sight-seeing trips and the sports which they usually favour in their leisure moments. The arrangements for billeting have been satisfactorily completed and it is confidently expected that the brigade members and all who have accompanied them to this rendezvous will carry away pleasant memories of an attractive corner of New Zealand .
