ROBBERS IN BANK
BID TO BLOW SAFE WELLINGTON EXPLOSION (P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 6. An attempt was made to blow the safe of the Courtenay Place branch of the Union Bank of Australia during tlie week-end. The explosion jammed the door and it could not be opened. The safe deposit in the bank was opened and the contents taken, it is understood that it contained s substantial sum of money, but a final check has not yet been made The robbery was discovered when flic staff arrived on Monday morning and it took until 4 p.m. to open the safe door. The robbery was one of h series during recent weeks. Parlv last Friday morning an exactly similar attempt was made to open lhe safe at Market Gardeners, Limited, Wakefield street. In that case, too, the door jammed and could not be opened. The Commissioner of Police. Mr. J. Cummings, said yesterday, that, as after the last war, there had been a slmht increase in burglary, but he was confident it would be kept under control bv police patrols and other new methods of detection.
