JAVA SITUATION
AUTHORITY GIVEN SJAHRIR'S NEW POWER (U am.) BATAVIA. March 4. The Republican Premier, M. Siahrir, announced that he has been given authority by the convention of the Central National Committee at Soerakarta to commence negotiations with the Dutch representatives. M. Sjahrir, who has returned from Cemiai .Java, added mat he telt his position had been considerably strengthened especially by the convention's strong’ vote of confidence in him. Probably six or seven parties would be represented in the new Cabinet. The selection of representatives had not been completed. One member of M, Sjahrir’s party declared mat the negotiations would begin with the Dutch proposals serving as a basis. He warned that "too much should not be taken for granted. M. Sjannr will act with a complete mandate from the convention and the President. Dr. Soekarno. ’
The Associated Press correspondent commented that it was generally accepted that M. Sjahrir had a personad triumph at SoeraKarui and could now claim much greater allegiance in Java ban he previously enjoyed. The delay in completing the Cabinet's reconstruction might be due to disagreements with the party leaders. M. Sjahrir made n plain to the convention when he accepted appointment as the man to select the new Ministry in the consultations that he would not have any man with whom he knew he could not work, nor would he allow any .Japanese collaborationist taint in the Cabinet. M. Sjahrirs action in the early stage of the conference in tendering the resignations of himself and the Cabinet Was a formality and did not indicate disagreement with the convention.
