RUATORIA SHOW

COAST EXHIBITS SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION GOOD HORSE SECTIONS Residents ot the Waiapu Valley mustered in strength for the annual Show of the Ruatoria A. and P. Association, held in Ruatoria on Friday and Saturday. .the gross attendance for the ,wo days being between 700 and 800. The first nay was given up to ;he sheep-dog trials, the produce section of the Show having been abandoned owing .to the dry conditions; and the chief' interest centred naturally on the second day’s programme, comprising horse events and a wide selection of sheep exhibits. Weather conditions were fine until about 4 p.m. on Saturday, when rain fell without affecting the success of the function. Mr. E. R. Black, Gisborne, judged the sheep section, Mr. Frank Evans the horse events for adult riders, and Mr. F. R. Jefferd the children's and pony events. Maori Teams Compete As a special Show attraction, the competitions in poi dance and Maori action songs were held in the evening at the Mangahamia Hall, where a public dance was largely attended and the competing teams attracted a considerable amount of attention and applause. Two teams were entered in the poi dance, both being from the Hiruarema settlement. The judge, Mr. Prikapa Awatere, was unable to separate the two entries, and awarded them a tie for first and second places, the Poi Cup thus being retained by Hiruharema.

The action-song competition was a good deal stronger, in point of numbers, and the visitors were pleased to note the attention to detail in the costuming of the teams as well as to the training of the participants in action and harmony. First place in this competition went to Tikitiki, with Tokomaru Bay second and Hiruharema third. The differences between the performances which guided the judge were barely recognisable by European spectators, but the awards were warmly applauded by those in close contact with Maori competition work, who caught the fine shades of difference.

The Mangahamia residents showed their customary hospitality to the guests, and served a well-prepared supper. The hope was expressed that next year the competitions would figure in the schedule of the Show, and that the leading teams would appear on a staging in the showground.
