TARUHERU BRIDGE

NELSON'S WORKS SITE

DOUBTFUL “GIFT HORSE”

REPLACEMENT URGED

The dilapidated condition of the old Taruheru River bridge at the site of the former Taruheru freezing works was brought lo the attention of the Cook County Council at yesterday's meeting by Mr W. T. Wilson, who suggested that the time was ripe for replacement of the bridge.

“This is a gift horse with a very doubtful mouth,” remarked the chairman, Mr. E. H. Baker, who explained that when the freezing works was dismantled, the bridge was handed over to the council, as a gift.

Mr. J. T. Gordon supported the correspondent, and said that it was unlikely that the bridge should be renewed on its present site. The structure was very old, and it would last no more than five years, he thought. Heavy traffic had done a lot of damage to the decking. In reply to the chairman, the clerk, Mr. F. T. Robinson, stated that if the bridge were renewed, it would be purely a county responsibility. The borough could not be called on for a contribution, even if the bridge was replaced at the cemetery site. Members were unanimous that the bridge was extremely useful to county residents and the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, was asked to report upon the bridge and to consider alternative proposals for reinstatement or replacement
