THE PEPPER FLEW

SHOCK FOR ROBBER WOMAN’S INITIATIVE (9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 14. Two masked men who attempted to hold up the 68-year-old proprietress of a private hotel received a shock early yesterday morning when the victim took the offensive. On- being ordered to “hand over,” she "threw more than a pound" of pepper in the face of one mahr-.;.1n her own words, “It flew right into his'mask and he began to call me all the names he could think of.” _ Helped by the other man, who carried something that may have been a revolver, the bandit stumbled downstairs and the two made their escape. The woman afterward admitted that the pepper was kept for just such a purpose. This hold-up attempt was conducted similarly to a number of previous raids on hotels in which safes containing hundreds of pounds were removed.

It was a calamitous night for the lawless element, for three other men were arrested at pistol-point by the police hiding in a bond store.
