AUSTRALIA’S DEFENCE
STUDY OF ATOM WEAPONS (10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 14. Australia’s defence plans will be shaped by a scientific committee to be appointed immediately by the Federal Government. The committee will pay particular attention to atomic bombs and the use of atomic energy. The first task is to make a survey and appreciation of scientific weapons. The Minister of the Army, Mr F. M. Forde, stated that acting Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant-General Sturdee will revert to the 1940 role as chief in about a fortnight and his powers will be taken over by the recently constituted Military Board, which will shape the future of army development. A defence committee will examine and co-ordinate the recommendations of the army, navy and air force and be the final arbiter of Australia’s future security.
