INCIDENT ON FARM
ASSAULT ALLEGED CHARGE AGAINST FARMERS (P.A.) DUNEDIN Feb. 12. When two surveyors and a constable attempted to enter a Kaka Point farm property yesterday they were opposed by the owner and his son, who allegedly adopted a threatening attitude by presenting firearms. Later an armed police party arrested the men, who were charged this morning with committing aggravated assault on Constable Boyle. The accused were James Murray, aged 74, and Togo James Murray, aged 41. The police stated that after their arrest and while en route to Dunedin the accused persisted with stories that if they were granted bail they would “get their guns and do the surveyors in.” The accused were granted bail conditional upon their not obtaining firearms, and were remanded until February 20. The incident was apparently the sequel to a threatening letter that Murray, Sen., sent to the Clutha County Council defying the latter to proceed with forming a road through his property.
