;(9 a.m.) TOKYO, Feb. 11. General MacArthur stated that he would open the occupied areas to servicemen’s wives about May 1 and hoped that Congress will permit free transportation for all ranks. However, he warned them .that living conditions were not like America to-day; instead, they resembled the pioneering conditions of the covered-wagon days. The War Department announced on February 1 that dependents would be permitted to join servicemen, all ranks, overseas providing adequate housing, subsistance, and medical care were available.
