APPLES FOR EXPORT

POSITION UNCERTAIN LOCAL MARKET PACKING Owing to the shortage of shipping space the export of apples from New Zealand is very uncertain at present and as a result a change of instructions have been made. At present and until the position clarifies it is not intended that the locally-grown fruit will be among that for export. Earlier arrangements were for about 500,000 cases to be sent from the Dominion, mainly from Hawke’s Bay and Nelson, together with a smaller quantity from Auckland, and these would have constituted the first apples sent from New Zealand to Britain since pre-war days. Growers in the areas concerned have been advised now not to pick Cox’s Orange at export maturity, but to pick and pack them for the local market until the Internal Marketing Department notifies otherwise. Other varieties which may be exported from New Zealand will be ready for picking early in March and by then the export position will have been clarified. Dry weather is having its effect on the .sizing up of apples, not only in this district, but also in the other producing areas, including Nelson.
