HEADLAMP FAULTS

INCORRECT SETTINGS CHECK IN BOROUGH A check on head lamps of motor vehicles in Gisborne was made by the borough traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Nowell, on two occasions over the week-end and the owners of a large percentage of those examined have been given notice to comply with the regulations. Action will jje taken against offenders in the near future if steps are not taken to rectify the danger. The check revealed that a large number of the headlights had been adjusted too high,” Mr. Nowell commented. “No provision had been made when the lights ewre being set for extra passengers weighing the back of the car down and thus raising the level of the front. The lights had obviously been set when the cars were empty.” Another contributing cause to the glare menace created by incorrectlyadjusted headlights is that headlamps of the ball and socket type had been knocked out of adjustment and consequently lacked the correct focus. ' “Because warrants of fitness are for 12-month periods, many car drivers are evidently relying on the fact .that they hold a current warrant of fitness to cover them,” Mr. Nowell observed. A number of those checked by the inspector are nearing the expiring date, which means that the best part of a year may have elapsed since the last check. ‘Car drivers are reminded, that although they may hold a current warrant of fitness anything may happen to <t, the car after its issue, and the responsibility of complying with the regulations at all time is theirs,” Mr. Nowell warned.
