RADAR ROCKETS

50~MILE_CEILING WEAPONS OF FUTURE GUNS MAY BE OUTMODED WASHINGTON, Jan. 29. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that rocket weapons could reach any point in the world, said LieutenantGeneral Levin Campbell, the retiring Chief of Ordnance. The army had developed a radarcontrolled rocket which streaked vertically for 50 miles. The German scientists who helped to develop the V weapons had been assisting the American Army in rocket research. “The time is coming when the gun, as we know it, will no longer exist,” he said. “Maybe there will be a combination of conventional artillery and rocket, with the gun giving the initial impetus.” Major-General George Van Dusen, Chief of the Signal Corps Engineering Technical Service, said the army scientists who had made contact with the moon, would attempt to increase radar’s power of sensitivity. The army intended to build a new entenna base which would permit radar to scan the skies vertically as well as horizontally. This, combined with standard observations of the moon, would make it possible to learn what effects the ionosphere had upon radio waves.
