AMERICANS’ RECALL
INDIA AND BURMA ACCELERATION PROMISED (9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 29. A member of the House of Representatives has sent a letter to the Secretary of War, Mr. R. Patterson, urging the return of all American troops from India and Burma before they become embroiled in British and Indian politics. If disorders resulted from the British refusal to grant self-government, he said, American troops might be compelled to fight in self-defence. “The member added that he had been informed that American troops in India on January 1 numbered 55,000 and would be reduced by 4000 by July 1. “Frankly, the excuse of protecting surplus property is no longer valid for keeping a single American soldier in India,” he continued. Mr. Patterson told a press comerence that he believed it would be possible to speed up the withdrawal of American troops from India, Burma, and the Middle East, and discharge all men at present there before June 30.
