IN STATE OF SIEGE
CITIES BATTLE IN STREETS WORKERS AND POLICE (11 a.m.) NEW YORK. Jan. 29. A 60-day state of siege has been declared in Chile following clashes between members of the Chilean Workers’ Federation and armed police in which four persons were killed and 68 injured. The federation’s secretary, Senor Bernardo Ibanez, announced that a national strike would be called as a protest against the police attack after the federation’s speakers criticised the Government. When .the fighting subsided the crowd soaked union banners and newspapers with blood and hoisted them on poles. The demonstrators .then sang the “Internationale.” Some banners called for the election of Senor Telias Mafertte, who was recently nominated as the Communist candidate for the Presidency.
