Readers’ Opinions

WELL DONE GISBORNE

Letters to the Editor.

Sir —As a recent visitor to Gisborne I would like to express through the medium of your paper my sincere admiration for what your citizens have accomplished. Familiar with the Gisborne of olden days, I was amazed on my return a short while ago to find the town so wonderfully developed. I consider the shopping centre to be one of the most advanced in the Dominion, and from a businessman's point of view 1 imagine that its progress from now on is assured.

Besides that, I must congratulate the borough on its work of beautification. I understand from those with whom 1 have spoken and from your newspaper rcoorts that this has been accomplished chiefly through the medium oi the Gisborne Thirty Thousand Club. It that is so, I can only voice the regret that so few towns in the Dominion have such a worthwhile body working ■a their midst. The Centennial Marine drive is a credit to the clubs effoits.and the other works proposed to be undertaken should place your town in the front line of interest from the overseas tourists’ point of view. I think some effort should be made to provide increased accommodation for the influx of visitors which is bound to take place, and I would suggest to the Thirty Thousand Club that it establishes some kind of booking centre for strangers seeking accommodation. The club is evidently a very able body, capable of tackling difficult problems, and the accommodation problem is a real one. The cabin camp project is excellent and should be given every encouragement, t have no doubt that if the club continues its good work of the past few years Gisborne will one day be renowned. not only in the Dominion, but also overseas. E. PASCOE, Wellington.
