SO. .The surprise of the final day’s play in the Auckland Tennis Association’s championship tournament yesterday was the defeat of Miss Margaret Beverley, winner of the New Zealand title a little aver a fortnight earlier, by Miss C. G. Attwood. Miss Attwood won in straight sets, the first a prolonged advantage one with Miss Attwood prevailing o—7. , The New Zealand champion made a lot ot errors in the second set. whereas her younger opponent was steady and confident, taking tr** set at. (» —2. The final of the men’s singles was a marathon between N. 1A Bedford, former titleholder. and 15. I*. Tank. This exhausting contest lasted for three and a half hours before Halford prevailed at the end of five sets. The first set thoroughly tested the stamina the contestants, Bedford prevailing 13—11. From then on their fortunes fluctuated, first one and then the other gaining the ascendency and being urged on by a large gallery. ,1. \Y. l.iirn and A. C. After tlm lapse of some years (lurin': the war, the Tolnga Hay Tennis Club revived its Anniversary Day tournament this season, and play during the wee-end produced some keen and lively matches. Visitors from Gisborne and other parts of the 3-last Coast took part in the fixture, which oil this occasion was limited to doubles matches.
