JEW-RUNNING SHIPS
1900 FROM EUROPE CAUGHT OFF PALESTINE PASSENGERS DETAINED (10 a.m.) JERUSALEM, Jan. 18. Nineteen hundred illegal Jewish immigrants from Europe were brought ashore under a strong military guard at Haifa, reports Reuter’s correspondent. They were aboard a 500-ton vessel which was intercepted by . a British destroyer outside Palestine territorial waters. They were disembarked without incident. from a vessel at Enzio Sereni. Guards escorted them (o a clearing camp at Athlit for detention pending an investigation The decision to disembark immigrants was taken after a midnight conference between the army, police and Jewish Agency representatives. There are 3(5G women. The remainder are men aged between' 15 and 80. Except for five hospital cases, all are healthy and warmly clad. They are believed io have left a south Italian port 12 days ago. They were assembled from various camps for displaced persons which they reached after escaping from German concentration camps. The conditions aboard the ship are gtated to have been appalling.
