The Gisborne Herald. IN WHICH IS INCORPORATED ”THE TIMES.” GISBORNE, FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 1946. THE MIXTURE AS BEFORE ?

is the United Nations’ Organisation "a mixture as before,” of the League of Nations? Arc there blocs and groups of nations already working together in it for their own ends? Will UNO work? These questions were asked and convincingly answered in a cabled message received yesterday from .the special London correspondent of the New Zealand Press Association. The gist of the observant correspondent’s findings is that the world is entitled to view with reasonable optimism a series of new developments indicating that “the mixture as before” is not to be administered.

Some of the factors which this time promise progress and security have already been the subject of editorial comment. Naturally the keen interest taken in the UNO proceedings by the United States and Russia will make a big difference in the status of the modern organisation. Also encouragingly apparent is the advantage to be. gained from the use of force, or the threat of it, to prevent the rise of aggression. There is still another cheering sign, however, which has nothing to do vvith physical power; this is the steady growth of the feeling that moral influences must be strongly associated with the working of the United Nations. The spirit of give-and-take and the making of concessions by one country or another before a deadlock introduces rancour and provocative argument would be of the most valuable assistance in creating the appropriate atmosphere for getting things done quickly and without friction. Within the past two days of the London conference several speakers, including Dr. Wellington Koo. bringing wisdom from. China, and Professor Schmerhorn, of Holland, have drawn attention to the need for international morality as a driving force.
