COSMIC RAY STUDY
NEW SOURCE OF ENERGY WASHINGTON, Jan. 16. Dr. Compton, one of the leading scientists who developed the atom bomb, told Washington University that a much greater amount of energy than was produced by splitting the uranium atom may develop from the use of cosmic rays. He said procesises had appeared in the study of cosmic rays which transformed all of the mass of a particle into energy. Only onetenth of one per cent of the mass of a uranium atom was released as energy in the development of the bomb. “Cosmic rays may carry us across the frontier to the microworld, where we can study the particles of which the atoms themselves are made,” he added.
