SHIPS FOR BRIDES
U.S. LUXURY LINERS AUSTRALASIAN RUN SPECIAL BABY SERVICE (10 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 17. The Matson Company will soon regain control of two of its four luxury liners which are at present being used as troopships. The Monterey and Matsonia will be handed back to the company after each has completed one more voyage to the western Pacific to pick up war brides, diplomats and troops. The Monterey, which will sail on January 24, is at present being converted to carry 1200 Australian wives of American servicemen and babies to America. The Lurline will continue the Honolulu-San Francisco run for several months while the Mariposa will soon leave for Australia to bring back war brides. The War Shipping Administration announced that henceforth ships carrying war brides and babies from Australia and New Zealand will be specially equipped with diaper laundries, baby baths, playrooms, nurseries, sterilisation kitchens, baby foods, talcum powder, oils and absorbent soaps. They will also carry baby staffs consisting of two doctors, five nursces, eight Waac’s and four soldiers, and one to four Red Cross representatives.
The announcement followed complaints from servicemen’s wives arriving aboard the Permanente from New Zealand.
