MIKADO INDICTED
NO. 1 CRIMINAL
AUSTRALIAN-N.Z. LIST
ALLIED H.Q. EMBARRASSED
(9 a.m.) TOKYO, Jan. 17. New Zealand and Australia have named Emperor Hirohito Pacific war criminal No. 1 on lists submitted to General MacArthur, thus causing some embarrassment at Allied Headquarters, which have been trying to keep Hirohito's name out of this delicate matter for the time being, says the New York Herald-Tribune correspondent.
The British did not name Hirohito on their list, but the United Kingdom liaison head in Japan, Lieut.-General C. H. Gardiner, said the list of persons regarded as major war criminals by the British Government or the Allies had not yet been finally agreed upon. China also named Hirohito in a list prepared in October. It is generally assumed that the New Zealand and Australian demands for Hirohito’s scalp will be hushed or at least subordinated for the present. Furthermore, evidence brought out during the trial of General Tojo and his Cabinet may prove the deciding factor in any decision concerning the Emperor.
