BRIDGE RENEWALS
OVERDUE CHECK
WORK IN COOK COUNTY
As some of the bridges in the Cook County are overdue’ for renewal a careful check is being made, on the bridges, in' the county and it is expected that a programme of bridge renewals will require to be put in hand at an early date, the engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, reported to yesterday’s meeting' of the Cook County Council. Good progress has been made with Martin’s bridge, Wairhata, which should be finished in about 10 days. It was not found necessary to close the bridge unduly, and very little hold-up of traffic was required, Mr. Jones commented. Plans and estimates have been taken out for the proposed alterations to Briant’s Bridge, Patutahi. The original estimate two years ago was £2lO, but the cost of the work is now estimated at £320. As this involves more money than is available in. the county estimates, it will be necessary for the council to reconsider the. arrangement made with the ratepayers concerned, he stated. The council agreed that this work should be done, despite the increase in the estimated cost and' authorisation was given for the necessary steps to be taken.
