ELECTORAL REFORM

Sir,—ln December a Herald correspondent advocated the adoption ox a system of preferential voting for Parliamentary elections. Is the system advocated by "Reformer” the same as what was in operation during the Australian Federal election on August 21, 1943? On this occasion Labour, with 209 177 first preference votes, gained all' three seats in South Australia, whereas 148,419 Libei'al and Country League voters were left without lepre'sentation altogether. This is another fine example of “one vote, one value. Over the Commonwealth as a whole Labour secured the 19 seats with just over 2,000,000 votes, while the 1,755,212 votes representing other political views got not one Senator to express thenideals No one who believes in electoral justice could support such a system. . HUGH PATTERSON.
