UNUSUAL SYDNEY FOG

BEACHES ENVELOPED

N.Z. VESSEL HOVE TO

(9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 13.

Extraordinary weather was experienced in Sydney yesterday. In the middle o£ a day of sweltering heat a heavy fog rolled in from the sea and enveloped thousands on the beaches. It persisted until late in the afternoon.

A weather bureau official said this type of fog was a rare phenomenon. It ■was probably caused by the impact of two moist air streams —one from the North Tasman and one from the South Tasman. The temperature at the top of the fog was 1 2, degrees higher than at ground level. The pilot of an aircraft which landed in Sydney from Auckland said the fog extended about 40 miles over the Tasman Sea.

The fog prevented the steamer Papanui, from Wellington, entering Sydney harbour yesterday afternoon. It hove to off the Heads until a pilot steamer guided it to an anchorage.
