DEATH FOR GRAVE ACTS
PRETORIA. Dec. 16. The death penalty would, in future, be imposed for flagrant cases of assault, said the Minister of Justice, Mr. H. G. Lawrence, in announcing that the South African Government is taking drastic action against the current crime wave
He added that judges, without juries, would deal with all crimes of violence, including those involving the use' of dangerous weapons. For these offences the minimum sentence would be five years’ hard labour. He said the Government was conducting a nation-wide recruiting drive for a police force offering improved pay and conditions.
