ENGINEERS’ RISKY TASK

T.N.T. SHOVELLED OUT

(9 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 17. The 40001 b German bomb, "Herman.” which stubbornly resisted to the last all efforts to remove it from the five-year-old resting place at Croydon. has been rendered harmless. The 200 families which were evacuated during the day. are returning.

Engineers pumped steam by a secret method in an endeavour to liquify the T.N.T. but the explosive was very hard as a result of • the impact and the period it bad remained buried. - The T.N.T. refused to run out and the engineers were forced to turn off the steam every half-hour and ladle the T.N.T. into a bucket by hand.

The first two hours provided some anxiety ns it was not certain how the T.N.T. would react under the heat pressure of steam. Ambulances and fire engines stood by ready to rush to the scene on the receipt of the agreed code word. Traffic along the mam Brighton road was diverted and tram services were interrupted.
