NEW CARRIAGES
RAIL IMPROVEMENTS
COMFORT OF PASSENGERS
The majority of the first-class passengers travelling south by the Gis-bornc-Wellington express this morning had the pleasant, surprise of arriving at the station to find their seats reserved in the first of two new carriages which have been allocated to this district.
The new first-class carriage makes a marked improvement, in the service. It is built on the compartment principle. At one end are six seats, in two rows facing each other, while in the main part of the carriage there is accommodation for 29 persons. • There is thus a total of 35 seats, which is six more than in the older type of carriage. The seats are of the modern declining type, similar to those in use in the carriages on the Auckland-Wellington Limited and three o’clock expresses. The second new first-class carriage allocated to this district is expected to be placed in use in the new year. In time, it is believed that it is the intention of the Railway Department to replace the present second-class carriages with more modern rolling stock.
