ROYAL RAE JUST WINS

DERENE UNLUCKY

HORORATA CLUB’S RACES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 17. The principal event at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting at Motukarara was won by Royal Rae, owned by the former horseman G. H. Humphries and trained by L. J. Ellis, who rode him.

But for a mishap to her gear a furlong from home Derene would have kept him. at bay. Derene had charge entering the straight and just as Royal Rae challenger her inside the final furlong her saddle broke and the irons came away. Her rider pluckily held his seat and Eat down to ride her home, but was at a big disadvantage. Derene made a renewed effort nearing the line and Royal Rae only just got there in time. It was a remarkable performance on the part of Derene and she can be expected to make amends for her misfortune during the holiday racing. Her next race will he in the Publicans* Handicap at Wingatui. The Hororata Hack Handicap was an easy propostion for the second choice, Baffling.
