LUNCHEON FOR BRIDE-ELECT Spring flowers were chosen for the decoration of the table at the delightful luncheon party given by Miss Virginia Williams at the Masonic Hotel yesterday., for Miss M. Kells, whose marriage to Mr. E. Y. M. Hutchinson will take place on Saturday. The hostess was wearing a smart deep crimson Ansora froeg with a black coat and n tailored suit in brown tonings was worn by Miss Kells. The guests included: Misses D. Cowan, J. and H. Bellerby, F. Loftier and J. Dods. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION The holiday spirit was abroad on Monday night, when the social club of the Hibernian Society held its annual ball under the happiest of auspices., The Poho-o-Rawiri hall provided a delightful setting for the function, and the large attendance included visitors from ns far afield _ ns VYoodville, Dannevirke, Hastings and Napier. The floor was under the supervision of Messrs P. Ryan and P. Munro, nnd Len Barker’s orchestra was responsible for the music, extras being contributed by Misses _N. Lnnnignn and N. Meara and Mr. L. Neill. A delicious savoury supper was served at tables artistically decorated with Iceland poppies combined with pink nnd mauve streamers. WOMEN'S TEMPERANCE UNION On the motion of the president,,Mrs. W. E. Goffe, a vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs. M. Foote, at. the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, held at the home of Mrs, M. Thomas, Russell street, on Tuesday afternoon. The devotional exercises were taken by Mrs. Thomas, and Mrs. Coles read the scientific fact from “The White Ribbon.” Congratulations were extended to the successful candidates in the recent Dominion scientific temperance examination, with special mention of three of the Gisborne candidates, Muriel Clement, Betty Neilson nnd Shirley Akroyd, who were placed second, third and fifth, respectively. It was announced that the temperance essay competition, conducted by the Dominion W.C.T.U., would close on December 15. Reference also was made to the Dominion poster competition in connection with illustrating that strong drink makes weak wills. The secretary, Mrs. F. E. Wallen, was asked to convey the congratulations of the branch to the district president of the North Canterbury W.C.T.U., Mrs. Barrel!, on her election as Dominion president of the National Council of Women. Tho following remit, to be presented at the Hawke's Bay district convention, which will take place in Dannevirke on October 31, was discussed: “As it seems impossible to carry prohibition In the near future should we be satisfied with the Invercargill system and make it our aim for the Dominion? Is it good that young people and others have such facilities that they are able to have their one or two glasses of alcoholic drink in seeming respectability rather than getting it in worse ways ?” Afternoon tea was sowed, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mrs. Thomas and her daughters. WIFE OF AIR FORCE CHIEF Lady Tedder, wife of Sir Arthur Toddar, Marshal of tho Royal Air Force, who has been appointed to succeed Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Portal of Hungorford, was formerly Miss Marie De Seton'Black, younger daughter of Colonel Bruce Seton, of Abercorn, Scotland. She is his second wife nnd prior to her marriage in Algiers in October, 1943, was organising R.A.F. clubs in North Africa. The first Lady Tedder, to whom Lord Tedder was married for 27 years, was killed in an air crash in 1943 on her return to Cairo after opening an R.A.F. hospital at Benghazi. •'DON'T BRANDISH FEMININITY” “More and more women are taking part in public life.” said fjh's. j, w.
