HARSHNESS ALLEGED

MAN-POWER CONTROL DISCUSSIONS PENDING ( PR) WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. An undertaking to arrange a discussion of the question of the continuance of compulsion in the direction of manpower was given by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, in the House of Reoresentatives yesterday to Mr. w. J. Poison (Opp., Stratford) when consideration was being given to the Employment Bill in committee. Mr. Poison sought to raise the issue on the short title of the bill, but was ruled out of order, the Chairman of Committees, Mr. R. McKecn, holding that such a discussion would be outside the range of the provisions of the bill Mr. Poison said that in his own district statements had been published in the press of what appeared to be extraordinary harshness in the disposal of people who had been engaged in the professions and undertakings of businesses for which they had been trained and had been placed in other occupations for which they had no training and given menial positions. . Continuance of compulsion, in his opinion, opened the door for personal victimisation.

The Prime Minister said that it was a matter for discussion as to what was a reasonable thing to do and of examining the question of what industries might be free. Labour could not be allowed to run out of the dairy factories at the height of the dairy season.
