MAY BE AVAILABLE
QUANTITY OF TYRES STANDARD ARMY TYPES A quantity of tyres may be available for sale from the army _in the near future, according to advice from the Associated Chambers of Commerce received at last evening’s meeting of the Gisborne chamber. Any surplus stocks available from the army, however, would be of a standardised type adopted for army purposes during the war. These would not be suitable for the private motorist nor, probably, commercial use. Being of a standardised version, the tyres would not be readily adapted to commercial use. except in certain cases. Mr. H. H. Barker commented that he had understood previously there were stocks in the country. If the wholesalers had no supplies and the Government said theie were none available in the country, the question could not be pursued. Several members stated they were given to understand that there were small supplies somewhere in the country which would not be released. Mr. T. A. N. Corson confirmed the information contained in the letter, stating that the wholesalers were not in possession of stocks and neither the Government nor the services had surplus tyres. Mr. G. A. Nicholls said that there were literally no supplies available to retailers and there appeared to be no new tyres in any quantity in the Dominion. The sale of motor cars was at present governed by the availability of tyres, and although there were only used cars to be sold, if the rubber was poor then there was usually no sale. Mr. E. H. Marriner said that be had been informed on reliable authority that there would be no supplies of motor tyres coming into the country in bulk for 13 months. The next 18 months would be the hardest so far as the tyre position was concerned. It was up to car owners to conserve and nurse the tyres they had.
