NEW ASSEMBLY
PARTIES’JPROBLEM RIGHT WING’S DEFEAT COALITION PROBABLE (10 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 23. The sweeping electoral gains in the three French parties ,ali more or less equal in strength, totalling over a quarter or the Assembly, presents a big problem, says the Daily Telegraph’s correspondent in Paris. As against the old Right Wing parties, all throe were during.the last few weeks virtually in the coalition. They, were, in fact, equally united against the
now badly routed Radical Socialists’ three-party coalition or even a revival of the Socialist-Communist Popular Front is at least doubtful. On the other hand, the Socialists and Popular Republican movement, though not always in political harmony, are on friendly terms. A two-party agreement, if it were formed, would give them a small but permanent majority in the new House. M. Schumann, one of the leaders of the Popular Republican movement, told the correspondents that his party’s policy would not be decided until after the Executive met. The correspondent adds that it is learned authoritatively that the new Assembly will meet on November 5 when General de Gaulle will present his new Government. - After twice declaring that' M. Daladier had been elected, the French authorities now officially announce that he has been defeated. M. Herriot, a former President and Leader of the Radical Socialists, was also narrowly elected as a Radical. He was seventh on the list of eight successful candidates. The state of the parties is as follows; Communists .. .. 151 Catholic Left 142 i Socialists .. .. 139 ! Rightwingers .. .. 40 > Independents .. .. 40 \ Radicals 19 The latest official figures in the referendum are: For a single Assembly . .. 13,887,072 Against 554,750 A total of 9,582.210 voted in favour of General de Gaulle’s proposals for the Chamber and 4,841,249 against.
