SITUATION EASES

JAVA CONDITIONS PLANES FROM BURMA DUTCH TROOPS ARRIVING (11 a.m.) BATAVIA, Oct. 23. ' The situation in Java has eased according to reports received from Batavia. Two squadrons of Thunderbolts have arrived from Burma and two Dutch destroyers this week are on tne way to Java from Holland and also the liner Nieuw Amsterdam with Mr. M. E, Denning, chief political adviser to the South-east Asia Command has arrived here to investigate the political situation on behalf of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten. Brigadier - General Robin Pape, American liaison officer to the command, is also studying developments. The British Army spokesman reported that outside Batavia, Bandoeng and Buitenzorg Indonesian extremists continue to round uo Europeans and Eurasians. Six Nationalist leaders were arrested in Buitenzorg on charges arising from murders at the depot. The Times’s Batavia correspondent in Batavia denies the correctness of the contents of Dr. Soekarno’s cable to President Truman. He 1 says that in the interests of truth it should be pointed out that the only Dutchmen wearing the American style of uniform, with * their own distinctive badges of rank, are a handful of airmen who were equipped and trained in the United States and a limited number of Dutch officials from Australia. The vast majority wear Brit-ish-style uniforms. Their equipment was obtained from British and Australian sources. Dr. Soekamo’s cable was intended to rouse American opinion by suggesting that the Dutch would reoccupy the Indies in American disguise with American materials., The allegations levelled against the Dutch are absurd, although admittedly they are occasionally “trigger happy.” The. terrorism that is going on in Java at present is nearly all done in Dr. Soekarno’s name. •
