TWO-DAY MEETING

P.B. SPRING RACES

CLUB’S OPPORTUNITY

The allocation of an additional day’s racing on December 1 to the Poverty Bay Turf Club (announced on page 8) presents the club with the. prospect of conducting a two-day meeting, since it already has in hand arrangements for a spring meeting on November 24. The opportunity probably will be welcomed warmly by district racing enthusiasts, but the executive of the club will have to move quickly to prepare an extension of its spring fixture programme and get the details of the second-day events circulated among interested owners and trainers. So fqr ns is known, there are no other fixtures in the North Island which will adversely affect the conduct of racing at Gisborne on December 1, and if owners in Hawke's Bay in particular can be induced to send horses to Gisborne for the two-day fixture the club and the sport should both benefit considerably. A meeting of officials of the club will be hold early this week, it is understood, to develop the second-day programme and to allot stakes, which probably will be on the fa.irlv generous scale previously determined for the November 24 events. The prospect of renewed racing activity on the East Coast, under the auspices of the Tolaga Bay Jockey Club and the Ruatoria Racing Club respectively, also will bo noted with satisfaction throughout the district. These meetings have given sound encouragement to owners of horses of average merit, and more than one performer which later gained wider prominence was developed on the Coast courses. In the pre-war years meetings at Tolaga Bay and Ruatoria were included in the circuit of summer meetings which commenced with the Wairoa fixture and included two days of racing at. Gisborne.
