BOMB REPAIR MEN HIGHER PAY DEMAND MARCH TO WHITEHALL (9 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 9. Thirty-thousand of London’s bomb repair workers yesterday downed tools, assembled in Hyde Park, formed fours and marched to Whitehall to demand wage increases. The men are striking for half-a-day only. They claim that the ending of summertime means the loss of 30/- weakly overtime and they ask that the basic rate for tradesmen be increased from 2/3ld to 3/- an hour. The' workers’ marching columns were swelled to 450.000. As the procession held up traffic in Piccadilly, the men parodied tiro song “Bless ’Em All,’’ including the words: “Bless all those tyrants who bled us for years. Bless ’em for keeping our people in tears.’’
The Minister of Health, Mr. Aneurin Bevan, received the deputation. Thunderous applause from thousands of men greeted the suggestion, after the return of the marchers to Hyde Park, that they should stop building and repair work throughout Britain if their demands were not met.
