STRANDED SHIP
REFLOATED IN GALE CLAIMS FOR SALVAGE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. The hearing of the salvage claims against the steamer Kotor, which went ashore on the beach near North Cape in June of last year, was continued today before Mr. Justice Callan sitting in Admiralty jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. Captain Taylor said in reply to a question by the judge that if the Kotor had not been got off before the storm developed she would have been driven further inshore and severely damaged. To Mr. Barrowclough, the witness said that in such circumstances he would not say it would be impossible to got the ship off the beach. Further evidence for the Auckland Harbour Board relating to the salvage operations was given by Captain Reginald Carter, a pilot, who was on the Kotor for the occasion.
In reply to the judge, the witness said the master of the Kotor was a Greek who did not speak very good English and was at times hard to understand.
