ITALIAN OUTCRY
MONARCHY OPPOSED TROOPS GUARD PRINCE (10 a.m.) ROME, Sept. 11. Mounted carabinieri, light tanks and armoured cars last night guarded the Quirinal Palace, where Prince Umberto lives, following anti-monarchist demon- * strations organised by the Republican Party on the anniversary of ex-King Emmanuel's flight from Rome after the armistice in 1943, which the Republicans represent as an act of treachery to the nation. Similar demonstrations occurred at Pescara, where the King, in his flight, reached the Adriatic coast and also Ortona, wheie the Royal party shipped to Brindisi. The Republicans at Ortona later affixed a tablet to the harbour wall: “From this port the last King of Italy fled, leaving the martyred country to the Germans.”
