END IN NEW GUINEA
JAPANESE NAVAL FORCES ADMIRAL HANDS IN SWORD (10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 12. Muttering prayers for forgiveness to his ancestors, Rear-Admiral Sato reluctantly handed his sword to MajorGeneral H. C. Robertson, commander of the Sixth Australian Division and surrendered all the Japanese Imperial naval forces and their arms and accoutrements in New Guinea.
The surrender documents were signed on the quarterdeck of the Royal Australian Navy patrol vessel anchored amid the ruins of the former enemy seaplane base at Kairiru Island. The ceremony took less thai five minutes. Admiral Sato, tall, bald, ill and over 60 years old, was visibly moved when he reluctantly surrendered his sword after a tentative protest.
