AIR SERVICE

NO SATISFACTION WELLINGTON LINK FURTHER ACTION URGED “That is a most unsatisfactory reply. The Minister Is just putting off the question. We should still press in this matter, and 1 move in that direction,” declared Mr. M. J. White when the Gisborne Borough Council last night received advice from the Minister of Transnort, the Hon. J. O'Brien, that as the Government contemplated .taking over the operation of internal air lines within the Dominion, representations for the extension of the Gisborne service to Wellington would be given the fullest consideration when this had been done.

Mr. White said Union Airways were prepared to start the service, so why should not they do so and continue it until the airways were nationalised, should that eventuate.

Disgusted With Letter

“I am absolutely disgusted with the Minister’s letter.” stated Mr. G.. J. Jeune in support of Mr White’s motion. “It is just evasion,” he added.

The information he had was that there was an empty plane flying between Palmerston North and Wellington, particularly on Wednesdays.. This was caused through a plane going to Palmerston North for servicing. The service was needed not only for the summer months, but for everyday business, and there was a plane available.

“The present service is of no use to the business community,” Mr. F. Tolerton agreed. He said that if the air service from Gisborne to Wellington was instituted it would save a 13-hour train trip and a person could attend his business on the same day as he travelled.

“The airways company is anxious and willing to run the service,” Mr. White reiterated

Mr. H. H. De Costa also spoke in support of the motion, which was carried unanimously.
