WIVES OF AMERICANS
DEPARTURE FOR U.S.A. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. Those New Zealand wives of American servicemen who are going to the Panama Canal zone in a British ship under arrangements made by the Government have been advised that they are to sail in the Rangitild on September 21. The liner will leave from Wellington. Each wife has had to llnci her own passage money, plus the New Zealand travel tax of 5 per cent, the total amount being £O3. In addition, each wife has to' take £l5O in American currency for transportation from Panama to her destination. The following warning has been issued to wives by the shipping company: “It must be stressed that conditions of passage _ will be austere in the extreme when judged by peacetime standards, and _ attention is directed, to the following points: No particular type of sleeping accommodation can be guaranteedthe accommodation may be of the kind used. for troops; the bathing and toilet facilities will be of a limited nature and not necessarily within easy access of the sleeping accommodation; the meals will be on an austere scale: public rooms will be restricted: the passage must be accepted on the implicit understanding that no question of the refund of the passage money will subsequently be entertained; it must be understood that passengers will be subjected to the ship’s discipline administered by the master and the officer commanding the troops, if any.”
