PHOSPHATE ISLANDS
JAPANESE SURRENDER CANBERRA, Sept. 7. The Minister of Defence, Mr Beasley, stated to-day that an Australian force had been sent to Nauru and Ocean Islands lo take the Japanese surrender. These islands were within the. United States sphere of responsibility, and the Australian commander would accept the surrender as the representative of the Commander-in-chief of the United States Pacific Fleet, Admiral Nimitz, in the case of Nauru, as the Australian representative, and in the case of Ocean Island as the representative of Britairf.
