CIVIC FUNCTIONS

DEFERRED WELCOME WAR-SERVICE PERSONNEL SATURDAY’S PROGRAMME Service men and women who have recently returned to Gisborne will be the guests of the civic authorities at a welcoming function on Saturday, 'the public ceremony being followed by a complimentary luncheon at Poho-o-Rawiri and by a smoke concert in the evening. This form of welcome was devised in 1943, when it became evident that the arrangements for troop transportation would not allow of official welcomes being extended to the service people directly upon their arrival home. The last series of functions of this kind was held in May, and Saturday’s welcome is intended to refer to those who have reached their homes in the meantime.

Various local authorities in all parts of UTe district make individual arrangements for welcoming - home the men and women who return to their respective localities, and Saturday’s functions will be limited, for this reason, to exservice personnel * who have their homes in Gisborne. Facilities for entertainment are somewhat restricted, and it is not possible to extend a general invitation in view of the large number of borough residents who are entitled to participate. Service people intending to take pari in the functions have been invited to assemble at the Army Hall, Fitzherbert street, at noon, and march to the Peel street intersection, where a brief civic ceremony will take place with the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, presiding. After this ceremony, buses will be provided to convey the guests of the occasion to Poho-o-Rawiri, where the complimentary luncheon will be served. This latter function is being organised by the Gisborne Returned Services’ Association on behalf of the Gisborne Borough Council.

In the evening a smoke concert will be provided for the returned personnel at which members of • the various recently arrived drafts will have the opportunity of renewing acquaintance and enjoying a well-balanced programme of items.
