ANOTHER MIDDLE EAST DRAFT

HOME TO-MORROW BIG DISTRICT GROUP MAORIS BREAK JOURNEY Over 100 N.Z.E.F. veterans from the Middle East theatre will return to Gisborne to-morrow night, officially as members of a replacement draft but actually on their way to permanent civilian life. The draft is part of a shipload which was scheduled to make its landfall to-day, and the South Island members ot which were to be disembarked at Lyttelton. A number of those in the draft have been with the New Zealand Division for years, and their return will be tire occasion of much rejoicing in homes throughout the district. Between HO and 40 of the returned men arc Maori Battalion veterans, and special arrangements are being made for their travel to Gisborne and on to the East Coast. Whereas it is intended that the European soldiers v/ill travel from Wellington to Gisborne by tomorrow’s express, the Maori soldiers will break their journey at Pakipaki, Hawke's Bay, and will spend tomorrow night there, coming on by roach-service on Friday and reaching the Poho-o-Rawiri meetinghouse, Gisborne, at about b p.m. on Friday. A special tribal welcome is being prepared for Lieutenant-Colonel Awatere and those members of his battalion who accompany him.
