Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Monckton have made their home in Aberdeen road after residing at Ngntnpa for a number of years. Mr 3. L. Jox-Blake, Mangapoike, was the week-end guest of Mrs. Vaughan field. Hcxton. Mrs. W. F. Sloman nnd her daughter, Mrs. Paul Williams, Wainui Beach, returned on Sunday from a visit to Te Puia Hot Springs. Mr. R. Sherriff, headmaster of Huntly School, Marton, and Mrs. Sherrilf, who were visitors to Gisborne for the Monckton—Jcfferd wedding, left yesterday for Rotorua. Lieutenant (A) R. Foxley, D.F.U., and Mrs. Foxley, who were the week-end guests of the latter’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Stacey—Campbell.—An engagement is announced between Ivan, youngest son of Mr. nnd Mrs. F. .1. Stacey, 770 Childers road. Gisborne, and Jean, second eldest daughter ot Mr. and Mr 3. Angus Campbell, Steele road, Kaitl, Gisborne. FIRESIDE CLUB MEETS Mrs. W. D. Tnrr presided over ft good attendance of members at the August meeting of the Methodist Fireside Club, held at the home of Mrs. 0. J. Elliott. At the conclusion of business, arrangements were discussed in regard to a concert which the circle is presenting later in the year. In connection with' the above project, Mrs. N. Hooper nnd Mrs. T. H. Berry attended the meeting in an advisory enpneity, their experienced assistance being much appreciated. A delicious supper was served by Mrs. Elliott, assisted by Mrs. Tarr. CLERKS FOR ADMIRALTY The first civilian girls to go to Australia to work for the British Admiralty arrived in Sydney recently from England. They were 13 English girls who had been engaged in clerical work at the British Admiralty in London during the war. They had kept their civilian status and had no special uniforms. When the ship berthed at Sydney they were all wearing slacks and sweaters. The girls were all over 21, which meant they were eligible for service overseas. Four 0 f them specially applied for the draft aB their husbands were serving in the Royal Navy in the Pacific, and In the case of these four their husbands had all obtained leave to meet them at the wharf. PARTIES FOR BRIDE-ELECT An array of miscellaneous gifts was received by Mis 3 M. Fraser, whose marriage to Mr. Maurice Moore, Whatatutu, will take place on Saturday, at the delightful tea party given for her by Miss F. Lofiler at her home at Pouawa. Spring flowers provided an artistic decorative scheme. A diverting competition was arranged for the entertainment of the guests, nnd the winner, Miss M. Fraser, was suitably rewarded. Mrs. I-oilier welcomed her daughter’s guests wearing a graceful frock of navy blue silk. A becoming frock of navy blue wool georgette was worn by the hostess, and the chief guest looked smart in a navy blue nnd white printed frock and a navy coat. A luncheon at the Mn-onic Hotel on Friday was the contribution of Miss Annette Barker to the pleasant round of parties. The table decorations were charmingly carried out with pink and white hyacinths, and a shoulder

spray was laid at the place of each guest. The hostess was wearing a becoming grey and blue pinafore frock and a black coat. A smartly tailored brown tuit was the choice of Miss Fraser. Among the guests wore Mrs. Jobson, Misses M. Williams, Ruatoria, L. and M. Witters, F. Lofiler, D. Cowan and J. Hods. Miss Fraser also was the chief guest at a large miscellaneous gift tea given by Mrs. A. J. Reid, Tolaga Bay, and Mrs. R. Fraser, Arero, at the Tolaga Bay Inn on Saturday morning. Bowls of mixed flowers, artistically arranged, provided an effective setting lor the guests. Mrs. Reid was wearing a smart black ensemble with a hat to match. Mrs. Fraser wore a becoming nut brown frock with a matching hat nnd a fur coat. Miss Fraser’s attractive grey frock was worn with a navy blue coat and a hat to match. VICTORIA LEAGUE A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs. W. G. Sherratt was passed at the thirty-second annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Victoria League, held in the league club rooms yesterday afternoon. Five new members, Mcsdnmes F. R. Hill. E. Smith, E. W. M. Wallis, W. Wallace and K. M. Irwin,- were welcomed. The president, Mrs. L. Balfour, was warmly congratulated on the excellence of the mwonl report by Mrs. P. Carry, who moved its adoption, the motion being seconded by Mrs. G. Lockwood. The very satisfactory financial statement presented by the treasurer, Mrs. H. D. Humphrey, was adopted on the motion of Mrs. 11. Gilmer, seconded by Mrs. A. V. Clare. The congratulations of the meeting were conveyed to Mrs. Humphrey by Mr 3. Balfour.

In a short address, Mrs. Balfour reviewed the events of the past five or six years in an interesting manner. In reporting on the activities of the Poverty Bay Women’s Representative Committee, Mrß. P. Hockley drew attention to the “Bites for Britain” campaign launched by the Mayoress, Mrs. N. H. Bull. The opportunity was taken to extend “bon voyage” wishes to a member, Mrs. M. E. Lowe, who, with her husband, is returning shortly to the United States. The election of officers resulted:—Present. Mrs. L. Balfour, re-elected; chairman, Mrs. P. Barry, re-elected; permanent vice-president, Mrs. D. McKeague; vice-presidents, Mcsdnmes .1. S. Nugent and H. H. DeCosta; secretary, Mrs. I. Stephenson, re-elected; treasurer, Mrs. H. D. Humphrey, re-elected; committee, Mesdames P. Hockley, J. Cranswick. R. Clark, C. E. Robinson, A. V. Clare, G. W. Willock, G. Lockwood and A. T. Parkes.

At the conclusion of business a delightful programme of concerted numbers was contributed by the members of the musical circle of the league. Mrs. I. Stephenson anted ns accompanist. During an interval Mrs. Balfour had the pleasure in presenting a music stand to the convener of the circle. Miss Loi3 Evans.

Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. J. S. Nugent, assisted by a band of helpers, and Mesdames D. McKeague and W. G. Alexander were responsible for the spies table.
