FIVE NAZI SHIPS SUNK MINES ATTACHED TO HULLS (10 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 3. The story has been released of six men in three canoes who sneaked into the German-held harbour of Porto Lago in Leros, in the Aegean Sea, ana attached limpet delayed-action mines to two enemy destroyers and three other vessels, which blew up. The canoes, which were specially designed to carry mines, were launched just before midnight on June 17, 1940, from a British naval vessel a mile and a half off Porto Lago. One of the canoes was holed and for 24 hours the two occupants had to bail out the water after plugging one leak with chewing gum, but all six returned safely. The leader, Lieutenant J. R. Richards, of Cardiff, was awarded the D.S.C.
